PEARL LEMON INTERVIEWS:
Dayana Mayfield is a SaaS copywriter and digital PR consultant who helps tech companies drive traffic that converts using onsite and offsite SEO.
A Fireside Chat
I had the opportunity to have an amazing conversation with Dayana Mayfield today. I remember that Dayana was one of the first people I spoke to when first getting into the PR space.
She took the time to talk to me and answer some questions so I could get to know her better and hear more about the things that have helped shape her business success to date – let’s get stuck into it!
What Is The Book (Or Books) You’ve Given Most As A Gift, And Why?
The title sounds a bit out there, but Get Rich Lucky Bitch by Denise Duffield-Thomas is an amazing introduction to money mindset for female entrepreneurs, who tend to undercharge and stay small for too long!
What Purchase Of $100 Or Less Has Most Positively Impacted Your Life In The Last Six Months?
The Visibility Lounge is a $45 per month membership hosted by Michelle Lewis, and it’s packed full of specific tutorials on marketing and publicity for small business owners. The free hot seats are incredibly valuable, as well.
When You Feel Overwhelmed Or Unfocused Or Have Lost Your Focus Temporarily, What Do You Do?
I take a break. I know that I’m naturally driven, motivated, and active. So if I can’t be my true self and produce at a high level, the only thing needed is a couple of days off to “cocoon”, or in other words to watch terrible reality TV for a few hours.
What Are Bad Recommendations You Hear In Your Profession Or Area Of Expertise?
People often tell freelancers just starting out that they need a personal brand, but in the early years, you need to focus on building out an amazing portfolio above all else. Then your personal brand can be built on a strong foundation of great work.
What Advice Would You Give To A Smart, Driven College Student About To Enter The “Real World”? What Advice Should They Ignore?
I would tell them to set themselves up for lifestyle freedom and, if they feel inclined, to start their self-employment journey sooner rather than later.
Not everyone is meant to be self-employed, but if you’re rebellious and driven, the sooner you get started, the sooner you’ll build a successful business and personal brand. Don’t wait until the perfect time or until you have a job that gives you experience. I had never had a marketing-related job before starting my copywriting consultancy.
DON'T WAIT UNTIL THE PERFECT TIME OR UNTIL YOU HAVE A JOB THAT GIVES YOU EXPERIENCE.

What Is One Of The Best Or Most Worthwhile Investments You’ve Ever Made?
Investing in Allie Bjerk’s Tiny Offer Lab was a great investment because it taught me the strategy behind course creation and sales pages for digital courses.
Being a copywriter for SaaS companies, it was a completely different vibe. I’m happy I was able to create a low-ticket course that still generates sales without me even doing much to market it.
Tell Us About Someone You Admire And Why You Admire Them?
I admire Chima Mmeje, a Nigerian copywriter, because of the way she brings copywriters together and builds relationships with very successful copywriters.
She started a mentorship group where first-world copywriters offer 4 free coaching sessions to a copywriter living in a third world country. I’m grateful to her for the ability to share my experience with others.
What Careers Advice Would You Give To Your 21-Year Old Self?
I would tell my 21-year-old self that you can get paid doing what you love: writing. I would urge her to explore all of the different career options for writers, instead of believing in the starving artist mentality too soon.
Tell Us About Your Business. What Does It Do And What Value Do You Add?
I write websites and long-form blog posts for SaaS companies, and I also teach SaaS founders and executives how to drive high-quality backlinks to their websites. My clients get high converting web content that brings in traffic and leads.
What Is The Most Surprising Thing You've Seen In Your Industry?
It always surprises me how many copywriters want instant success. They want to get to six figures. They want to charge thousands of dollars for their services. And yet, when you look at their work, they don’t know what they’re doing!
It’s shocking how many people just want the money and the clout without backing that up with results for their clients. I guess some people are just impatient!
Where Do You See Your Industry In The Next 5 Years?
More competitive, but also more established – more and more business owners are understanding what a “Virtual Assistant” is exactly, and more companies are working remotely than ever before. This will create a lot of demand, however, and with this there will be new entrants into the market.
How Has Covid-19 Changed Your Industry?
I have been writing copy for SaaS and tech companies for five years, and I’m so lucky to have been serving a largely future-proof industry. Now I see my clients taking their companies from the office to remote work. I also see an influx of copywriters interested in serving this niche, and there’s plenty of opportunities to go around.
