Although local SEO does not have an official definition, several brands and agencies have attempted to explain the marketing tactic.
Moz, one of the leading sources of SEO knowledge and research in the world, defines local SEO as “a process for increasing search visibility for businesses that serve their communities face-to-face. These can be brick-and-mortar businesses with physical locations or service-area businesses that operate throughout a certain geographic area.”
Local SEO is a different animal to general, even though many of the basics are the same. Not all SEO agencies are well versed in local SEO, especially as it is changing and evolving very rapidly right now. Pearl Lemon are.
While there are a number of differences between SEO and local SEO the biggest is that local SEO has a set geographical component.
This means that if a business is located, for example, in Philadelphia, an SEO campaign will be most effective locally when it is focused on reaching consumers there specifically. You don’t need your pizza parlor to show up in a national search for the relevant keywords, just in Philly and the immediate surrounding areas.
All search engines are increasingly striving to make their results as relevant locally as possible. So if a business has implemented local SEO specifically it is almost always going to show up higher in the SERPs of one that has not.
Technical SEO is a term that refers to all the SEO activities excluding content optimization and link building. It covers following search engine requirements in order to improve crawling. These requirements are constantly changing and becoming more complex in order to keep up with the search engines.
On-page SEO refers to all the measures that can be taken on your website to improve its position in the search rankings.
This covers a lot of ground, everything from choosing the right keywords for your content to optimizing your images and ensuring that your site loads quickly. Ideally on page SEO issues should be solved before the campaign ever moves ‘off-site’.
Off page SEO covers everything that might affect your search placement that happens off site. This covers things like consumer reviews, guest content placement, social sharing and more.
Great content is a must for any site that wants to rank well in relevant searches. If content is SEO optimized it means it has been written with certain keywords and keyphrases in mind, but is not stuffed with them. Good SEO content calls for a delicate balance between writing for search engines and writing for humans, and as such can be a difficult form of copywriting to master.
Only if you want to appeal to an international audience. If you do, you’ll need to take on board extra SEO considerations that others don’t. You may need to localize content in the form of accurate translations, or in changing references in your content in regards to geography, local culture and more.
As more and more people make use of mobile devices instead of desktop computers to search for the things they need – that figure is up to well over half of all searches in 2019 – the need to ensure that your site is mobile friendly increases in importance every day. Since 2018 Google has maintained a mobile first index, and other search engines have followed its lead, so mobile SEO is a crucial element of any SEO campaign.
There are several different tools offered by the search engines themselves, but perhaps the most important is the Google Search Console. It offers an in-depth look at many of the things that go into determining a site’s position in the SERPs, although it won’t reveal all (search engines never do.)
The information offered in the Google tools can be rather hard for a ‘lay person’ to decipher however. That is where a free SEO audit, like the one we offer, can be very helpful.

Links are still the way that Google and other search engines primarily judge how relevant, ‘popular’ and respected a website is, so linkbuilding remains a very important part of SEO.
The way links are built is equally important. A slew of poor quality links are more likely to harm your site in the SERPs than help it, meaning that link quality is as important – if not perhaps more so – than link quantity.
Low-quality content – Google looks for unique content that adds value. Scraped content, copied content and just plain bad content may all earn your site a slap from Panda, the Google algorithmic element that was created to weed it out.
Keyword stuffing – Years ago you could stuff a page full of keywords and little else and it would rank. That was back when Google was in its infancy over a decade ago. Now the excessive use of keywords will earn you a penalty, not a SERPs boost.
Bad Links – Bad links are links on your website that have no recognizable value. If a link does not come from a high quality source and/or has no relevance to your site it is considered a bad link.
Paid Links – If Google believes you paid for a link they will penalize you.
In some cases, yes. If Google believes a site is committing a number of violations of the Google Webmaster Guidelines then they may choose to delist it rather than simply demoting it in the SERPs.
